Gothic Gothic 3: The Beginning
Now it’s getting normal for a big movie title or PC games to be released for the mobile too. Gothic is quite well known in the RPG genre among PC gamers. You play as Xardas, a young and ordinary boy who eventually turns into a strong Magician Warrior in his adventure in the fantasy Gothic world. I’m sure the fans of the series would feel familiar when playing the mobile version game.
The mobile version of Gothic doesn’t skimp on the story, it offers interesting and plot that are unique to the mobile game. In the huge world of Gothic, you can speak to various NPCs, they will give you information, offer you quest and give you orders. The dialogues in the game isn’t just button pressing, you have choice to select that will lead to different answer. Gothic offer players a lot of freedom in the game, you can wonder around anywhere you like without following the main plot. The game has been separated into two parts. In the first part you will see many different location such as cities, caves..etc on the bird view world map. To enter an area, just move your character onto the specific location. Battle occurs when you are moving between area, but you can choose not to encounter into a battle and move on. The 2nd part takes places in specific area where you can talk to NPCs, collect items and fight enemies directly on the map.
The graphics in the game isn’t as good as others RPG on the market, it’s actually the main downside of Gothic. But not as bad as you might have thought, there’re many interectable places in the game and many hidden treasure behind stones and chest, so do remember to check them frequently. The sound part of the game are also disappointing, although it offers some nice melodies in some places. It is insufficient and almost no sound effects can be found in this game which makes the long playing hours boring.
That’s basically the end of the game weaknesses. The strong point of Gothic is the gameplay and innovation system which I think it is very important for an RPG game. Gothic is not a short game, so save funtion is very important. You can save your game anytime you want in menu with different save slot available. What makes Gothic shine is the deep RPG system, there is a level system for your character, this is the most basic one. And you have this learning points which earned through fighting enemies that can be assigned to your main characteristics and weapon skills. But what if you don’t have enough learning points? It’s OK, you can use gold to buy and learn, money is valuable assets and important in this game. Does it sounds weird? Actually it’s a very simple logic, you don’t learn lock pick by fighting enemies, you pay the master of thief to improve your lock picking skills! Leveling in Gothic is not an easy task, you have to fight a lot of monster to reach a new level. The game forced you to take on side quest and fight more enemies as you would be killed instantly if you just follow the main story path. You need to learn and improve your skills.
If the graphics and sound of Gothic is a little better, I’d not hesitate to say it is the new king of mobile RPG. But with fierce competition from high cost developer, Gothic Gothic 3: The Beginning was able to find its standing point and offers some very unique RPG experience for the fans. If you can look pass through the graphics and sound, you would found something bigger lying ahead. It is not something that shouldn’t be miss by the hardcore RPG fans.
