Tornado Mania
Another crazy yet very fun casual mobile game by Digital Chocolate. The concept wasn’t too complicated, you play as the Tornado itself and your object? Of course, is to suck everything off the ground that pop up. The tornado move itself in clockwise when you are not giving order and it’ll keep moving forward slowly, to turn the direction, just press and hold the action key or 5 to reverse the direction. You will see a small arrow indicate its moving direction, release the action keys when it’s on your desired direction. It might first seems boring and hard to understand, but the more you play and more you get hang of it, you might find it rather addicting and innovative. Some time it’s hard to explain why it’s so addicting for a particular game notably Tower Bloxx, what so fun about stacking blocks one after another? That’s the magic touch there and it happens on Tornado Mania as well, maybe not as much. Tornado Mania is more to personal preference, I heard some gamers said it was one of the best casual mobile games ever released but some others just said it was OK. You may like it as much as I do or disagree with me, but it’s still a game you should keep your eyes on.
Tornado Mania as usual DC games offers two modes, one is the Utopia mode which apparently is the main story mode and there’s the Rampage mode for a quick game. The first Rampage mode lets you control the tornado in top-down view and destroy as much buildings as you can. If you are able to destroy a few buildings quickly enough you can do combo by destroying more nearby objects. All the combo points you collected is necessary for you to proceed to the next level, by next level I mean the size and power of your tornado.
The second mode which are also the main game you will probably play it first and spend most of your time here. It differs from rampage mode with far more dept in gameplay. In fact you are not just destroying buildings but also construct buildings as well, sounds conflicted? It’s all about skill, you are going to use the tornado as your demolition tool to lift buildings off their foundations without causing too much damages to your surrounding. If you are causing too much damages to the city, city helicopter will come and dampen your tornado to prevent you from further growing which you work so hard to mature your tornado into a monster. Then you are going to use the buildings you have collected to build your own utopia city! It turns to a sim city game where you have to place different types of building to keep your resident happy and make sure you provide enough electricity by linking it to the industrial buildings. There’s also the commercial buildings to create jobs and stadium for entertainment purposes.
As you establish your utopia slowly and successfully, more residents will be moving in to your little city. And it’ll also unlock more variety of buildings you can collect with your tornado and place it in your city.
Graphically the game isn’t mind blowing or can be considered great, but it was good enough with bright and attractive designs. Watching your tornado rampaging and sucking up animals and other small objects are always impressive. The sound on the other hand is disappointing, there isn’t any wind related sound effects that help to boost the immersive experience and the music becomes repetitive after a while.
Is it good enough to be the best games ever released? Maybe not. But it’s definitely a fun and innovative games that provides long term gameplay. If you are looking for something fresh rather than the usual casual games, then this is the game. Is it as addictive as Tower Bloxx? Maybe not. The game is deeper than Tower Bloxx and control schemes are also much complicated, maybe that makes Tornado Mania less addictive.
Tornado Mania is a combination of making and destroying. And it could never be that fun with tornado. If you like making play the utopia mode, if you just want to wreak havoc then play the rampage mode.
Score: 8.0/10
